The Clinical Pathology Laboratory is responsible for providing accurate, timely diagnostic test results for patients of the hospitals that are part of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as test results for research animals. Laboratory testing includes hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, fluid analysis/cytology, blood banking, and miscellaneous test procedures. Laboratory personnel also play a role in the education of veterinary students and residents on the principles of diagnostic testing, through one-on-one interactions.
This position involves the performance of many specific diagnostic tests including CBCs, urinalysis, coagulation tests, miscellaneous serology and parasitology tests and the operation of automated hematology and chemistry instruments. In addition, this position is responsible for troubleshooting, maintenance and quality control assay and documentation for each assay provided by the lab. The tech must work cooperatively with other lab technologists, clinician's, veterinary technicians and veterinary students while honoring expected turnaround times for testing. This will include answering questions about sample submission and proper use of the lab LIS and hospital EMR, as well as some one-on-one instruction of students. It may also include participation in teaching laboratories for veterinary students or outside participants. Some on call, overtime and schedule flexibility is required.
Basic Requirements: * Associates Degree in a science based program with 2 years of relevant experience in human or veterinary diagnostic lab setting. * Good communication and organizational skills essential. * Ability to work in a stressful environment in which multiple tasks must be performed simultaneously with accuracy and efficiency. * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
* MLT or MT with current certification and a strong understanding of a wide variety of diagnostic assays is strongly preferred.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This is a modified second shift position, although initial training will occur on the first shift. Once trained, this person will often be working alone in the lab. The person in this position will be required to work some weekends and holidays (day shifts), on a rotating basis. Some flexibility in scheduling is required. On some occasions, this person may be expected to cover the first shift, as needed to provide adequate staffing and meet the lab manager's need.
