Job Summary Provides primary clinical support to the provider, patient and their family to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s condition. Follows up on diagnostic testing to ensure completion, accuracy, and filing of same in medical record to ensure continuity and quality of care. Promotes a clean environment. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in specific age range on their assigned clinical area. Assists office coordinator with registration and scheduling responsibilities. Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of Susquehanna University in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Works under the general supervision of the lead nurse for daily operational issues. Works under the supervision of the physician in providing patient care.
Obtains and documents patient medical history, chief complaint, vital signs, and provides basic medical data base for provider, and prepares patient for examinations.
Provides direct clinical care as directed by provider.
Assists provider in performance of minor surgical diagnostic procedures and ancillary diagnostic examinations as directed by provider to facilitate accurate diagnosis.
Collects and prepares laboratory specimens (blood, urine, sputum, wound secretions) and completes associated paperwork (request slips, lab log, container labels, billing documents) to expedite laboratory studies with maximum accuracy and efficiency.
Matches all incoming laboratory reports, radiology interpretations, consultation reports, and diagnostic examination results with patient’s medical record and files in appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record. Uses computerized medical record and/or appointment system in designated areas.
Under the direction of the provider and/or site lead, assists with orientation of new personnel to ensure that they are appropriately trained to support patients and physicians.
Executes and documents ongoing patient communication, as directed by provider, prioritizes communications to the provider, responds to patient questions and requests to ensure efficient use of provider time and timely response to patient needs.
Reviews and reinforces patient education as directed by provider to ensure patient’s understanding of medical condition and compliance with treatment instructions.
May inventory medical/surgical supplies, pharmaceutical and controlled substances to ensure adequate supply levels, verity expiration dates, document utilization, optimize organizational efficiency and space utilization.
May clean, sterilize (when appropriate) and prepare instruments, according to established protocols, to ensure required level of asepsis and adequate availability.
Routinely inspects/observes condition and operation of diagnostic equipment and instrumentation to ensure proper operation and identify need for preventive and/or corrective maintenance. May assist in specific laboratory functions relative to the testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens as trained and directed by the physician.
Cleans/sets up examination of treatment rooms between cases, ensures required level of asepsis, availability of appropriate instruments and equipment, and preparation of patient.
Keeps current with policies and procedures.
Responsible for actively participating in patient safety improvement and management program. An active participant: a. Assumes responsibility for identifying processes or systems that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events. b. Knows and follows organizational and departmental policies and procedures applicable to assigned duties. c. Participates in required organizational and departmental patient safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational patient safety. d. Promptly reports serious events and incidents in accordance with established hospital policy and procedure.
Assists with coordinating external disease management and case management organizations.
Assists office coordinator with registration and scheduling responsibilities.
Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize clinical and clerical tasks. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, willingness to accept continuing education to broaden skills, good clinical skills to work effectively with the patient, patients’ families and providers. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to be flexible, and maintain confidentiality. Pharmacology knowledge preferred.
Education and Experience Certification of Basic Life Support (CPR) required within 3 months of hire.
Physical Demand Work is typically performed in a clinical ambulatory environment.
Education and Experience Minimum of one year experience in a clinical setting preferred, primary care preferred. In lieu of experience, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program may be substituted.
