The Pediatric Phlebotomy Laboratory at Doernbecher Childrens Hospital provides compassionate and efficient care to individuals, families, communities, and patient populations. Positioned as a walk-in service that operates Monday through Friday, the phlebotomy lab can service between 50-70 patients daily.
The phlebotomist in this position collects blood, urine, stool, and sputum specimens from pediatric patients in an ambulatory setting, as ordered by healthcare providers, for use in performing diagnostic or prognostic tests and provides related clerical, transporting, and non-technical support to the laboratory.
High school diploma or equivalent and completion of phlebotomy training program including significant time spent in a clinical rotation (2-3 weeks); OR
One year of college level psychology, communications, or science course work plus 1 year of dedicated phlebotomy experience/training in a clinical laboratory
Certification as ASCP (PBT), NHA (CPT), RPT (AMT), NCPT (NCCT) or equivalent required, or must be completed in the first year of employment
Strong customer service skills
Ability to interact with a variety of clients including doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients, and maintain a customer service focus at all times
Ability to initiate procedures and policies to improve work flow and work accuracy in Phlebotomy
Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Skills in dealing with high volume fast paced environment, with sometimes difficult public contact
Ability to work independently within established guidelines, to communicate and work effectively within a group
Ability to carry and lift up to 40 lbs.
Ability to stand for 4-8 hours continuously, depending on the tasks assigned
Ability to sustain frequent and sometimes prolonged bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying as required for assigned tasks
Ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers
Ability to utilize multi-line phones, general office equipment, etc.
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
One year of successful experience as a pediatric phlebotomist; previous OHSU health care experience
Experience with the EPIC electronic medical record system
