The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities of technicians, volunteers, and learners assigned to the Outpatient Pharmacy. This includes the direct supervision of technician staff, oversight of equipment, and ensuring the safe and efficient dispensing and distribution of medications and products in the central Outpatient Pharmacy. Major Duties: Supervises activities of the technician staff in central Outpatient Pharmacy area and remains proficient in each position. Serves as a liaison to physicians, nursing, or other facility staff, concerning problems related to outpatient pharmacy. Acts as the pharmacy's patient representative to resolve outpatient dispensing concerns. Documents patient contact and activities in the medical record as appropriate. Accurately labels and dispenses medications. Ensures proper dispensing documentation is completed. Dispenses controlled substances according to current policies, procedures, and standards established by DEA, FDA, VA, and Joint Commission. Effectively utilizes the Veterans Integrated Systems Technology Architecture (VistA), Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and ScriptPro computer systems and other automated pharmacy equipment and computer software systems. Assists in the implementation of all Pharmacy Service policies and procedures while assuring compliance with applicable standards (for example, Drug Enforcement Administration, Joint Commission Office of the Inspector General, etc) and VA handbooks and directives. Assures that all necessary pharmacy technician orientation and training occurs associated with the central Outpatient Pharmacy area. Establishes competencies and performance standards for Outpatient Pharmacy technician roles. Evaluates the conduct and performance of each pharmacy technician working in these roles. Conducts performance reviews, commendations for outstanding performance, and disciplinary actions of assigned employees to ensure optimal functioning of the central Outpatient Pharmacy area. Recommends and prepares merit promotion actions for where warranted. Ensures all equipment (e.g. dispensing automation, mailing equipment, etc.) is operated in accordance with safe and effective operating procedure and routine preventative maintenance is performed where appropriate. Assists in interviewing candidates for appointment or promotion according to federal laws and VA policies.
