This incumbent serves as an Intermittent Health Technician (EMT) in the Fire Service at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center (BCVAMC). The department also provides medical assistance to Fort Custer National Cemetery, which is adjacent to the Medical Center. The cemetery property and buildings are located on 770 acres of which approximately ¾ is heavily wooded. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation. Provides transportation services to Veterans in medically stable condition to other medical care facilities throughout the State of Michigan and surrounding areas. Will drive and operate an ambulance to the location of the patient. Performs ambulance inspections. Provides non-invasive procedures following State and Federal ALS protocols and in support of the attending Physician. Work Schedule: Intermittent Schedule, work up to 80 hours per pay period, including evenings and weekends. "Applicant will work at a minimum of five shifts per month, be available to work evenings and weekends not to exceed 8-hours per day unless needed by your supervisor." Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions. The work will also require prolonged periods of driving or sitting inside of an ambulance. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
