The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for two (2) Health Technicians in the Inpatient Medicine Health Care Group, Long Beach, CA. The incumbent will provide non-professional technical assistance to professional and non-professional licensed staff of the Inpatient Department for the care of patients presenting with emergent health concerns. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Able to understand/perform lab collection process. Experience in venipuncture blood draws. Perform basic EKG lead placements. Highly recommended experience: ECG TRAINING 3-5 YEARS EXPERIENCE AS NURSING ASSISTANT IN ACUTE CARE SETTING CURRENT EXPERIENCE USING RME & COMPUTERIZED MEDICAL RECORD SYSTEM CURRENT BLS TRAINING ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN UNIT WIDE SAFETY AND EMERGENCY PROGRAMS AND OTHER COMMITTEE Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ["Duties include but not limited to: Collecting blood sample. Verifies correct labeling and patient identification. Follows proper patient preparations and venipuncture while following collection techniques and bandage patient appropriately following collection. Follows appropriate safety protocol to include standard precautions, sharps handling, facility safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques. Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician Physical Requirements: Provides non-professional nursing care to patients experiencing extremes of behavior on a regular and recurring basis. Responds to emergency mental health situations, where danger of physical attack by patients requires special training. When patients express or exhibit suicidal ideation, the incumbent intervenes by utilizing techniques per established procedures to keep the patient safe, and maintain personal safety, while awaiting assistance. The incumbent must be able to lift 35 lbs., perform the following: pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulders and laterally, use of fingers, both hands, arms, and legs, sitting, walking, and standing for long periods.
