Performs supervised gross examination of small non-complex biopsy specimens that do not require sectioning. Narrative gross description to include quantity, color, size, and texture. Maintains equipment and troubleshoots problems. Assists pathologists in frozen sections. Performs various support functions of department of anatomic pathology.
Candidate must also possess excellent interpersonal and communications skills and have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform well under pressure.
Associates in Degree in related field Bachelors degree preferred.
ASCP Certified Histotechnologist Preferred.
At least one year in laboratory setting required.
Under supervision of pathologist / pathology assistant, will perform gross examination of select list of specimen types that do not require sectioning. Will document and provide feedback to pathologist / PA / supervisor of any tissue quality issues prior to tissue processing. Responsible for loading specimens into tissue processors as well as routine maintenance.
They will report directly to manager/lead and indirectly to pathologists/ pathology assistant. This individual must provide 100% accuracy in verifying patient identification and appropriate labelling of specimens, requisitions, and case information in LIS. Will be proficient in pathology case accessioning as well as label and cassette reprinting. Knowledge of pathology laboratory information system. Will perform other duties of the department as required such as block and slide filing. Manage specimen storage, organization, and disposal as well as inventory of grossing area.
